| Jim and Mary Schnell of Willmar have found SWIF’s General Endowment to be a wonderful way to support and advance southwest Minnesota, the place they call home. |

Every foundation is built upon an endowment, and the Southwest Initiative Foundation is no different. Although there is no single legal definition of an endowment, the most commonly accepted meaning is a fund which is kept in perpetuity to provide an ongoing stream of revenue generated by the investment of principal. That may still seem confusing, so more simply put, an endowment is like a savings account. The principal is invested and never spent – only the income is used for programs and expenses. When you give to the SWIF General Endowment, you provide the greatest flexibility to respond to the future needs and opportunities of southwest Minnesota communities.
In addition, SWIF and The McKnight Foundation have extended through 2011 our joint efforts to increase philanthropic resources, further economic advancement, and address social needs in southwest Minnesota. As part of that relationship, McKnight has issued a $2.7 million challenge grant to SWIF to build our regional endowment. That means McKnight will match gifts to the SWIF General Endowment dollar-for-dollar, providing an immediate 100 percent return on your investment in support of southwest Minnesota!
Building the SWIF General Endowment is central to the Foundation’s strategic, long-range plan for sustainability. The stronger the General Endowment, the more resources we have available to invest in our 18-county area. One way to help us build this important resource is to become a Growing Home Circle member by pledging $1,000 or more on an annual basis to the SWIF General Endowment.
